Nyungwe Forest National Park Rwanda

Nyungwe Forest National Park Rwanda is a mostly untouched, tropical rainforest with dense canopies found in the southwest of Rwanda.  Nyungwe forest officially became a park in 2004. Visiting Nyungwe Forest National Park Rwanda, however, gives the visitor a once in a lifetime experience.

Activities in Nyungwe Forest National park Rwanda

  • Primate safaris. Nyungwe forest is famous for its variety of primate species such as the chimpanzees, owl-faced and colobus monkeys. Therefore track the chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Furthermore, the forest is home to about 400 Angolan colobus monkeys. In all, Nyungwe forest has 13 varieties of primates.
  • Forest hiking; The forest has well-maintained forest trails such as Igishigishigi trail and Bigugu trails. You will also be able to see amazing waterfalls, springs and jutting trees that create soothing and cooling canopies. The forest, however, receives more than 2000mm of rain a year; so the sky is prone to open up any time.
  • Bird watching; There are about 310 bird species in Nyungwe forest national park Rwanda. The common bird to see while in the Nyungwe forest include; great blue turaco, giant hornbill as well as red-breasted sparrowhawks

See traditional forms of agriculture, animal husbandry, and apiary as you engage with the communities. Many of these communities have benefited from efforts by the Rwanda Development Board to channel these communities into conservation activities.
