Kidepo valley national park Uganda is found in the far northern corner of Uganda. It lies in the semi-dry rugged Karamoja valley along Uganda’s border with South Sudan in the north-west and Kenya in the northeast. In 1962, Kidepo valley was declared by the Ugandan government as National Park. Despite its enormous profusion of wildlife and stunning natural beauty, it is among the least traveled tourist destinations for visitors on a Safari in Uganda.

Kidepo Valley National Park Uganda covers a land area of 1,442 square kilometers; lies between an Altitude-range of 914m and 2749m. Therefore the park has different types of vegetation including; open thorny-bushes, montane forest, woodlands, semi-desert scrub as well as open savanna dotted with some trees. These offer habitat to the different wildlife.

Bird Watching in Kidepo Valley National Park Uganda

The activity either start at the headquarters of the park near at Apoka Lodge, or one will enjoy sights overlooking the beautiful Narus Valley. The park has approximately 500 recorded bird species; therefore it ranks second after Queen Elizabeth National Park as the best bird-watching destination. Thus, the rare species to spot here include; Black-breasted Barbet, Karamoja Apalis, and ostriches.

By Road; there are two major routes to Kidepo valley national park Uganda;

  • Kampala via Mbale-Soroti-Moroto then Kidepo 840km (12hours) in  4WD.

By Air

You can book a chartered aircraft from either Kajjansi or Entebbe International airport to Lomej airstrip in Kidepo.
