Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary Uganda.
The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary Uganda is the home of the only wild Rhinos in Uganda. It is found in Nakasongola District near Nakitoma Village off the Kampala-Gulu Highway. The Sanctuary is approximately 100 miles, north of Kampala Uganda’s capital and largest city.
The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary Uganda was a joint effort between the Uganda Wildlife Authority and the Rhino fund Uganda to restore the white rhino population in 2005. Both the Black and the White Rhinos are indigenous to Uganda. However, due to human conflicts and poaching by 1982, both species were extinct.
Rhino tracking excursions last about 1-2 hours where you will meet the sanctuary ranger upon arrival. He will give you an introduction about the rhino sanctuary.
You will then have the opportunity to see the rhinos in their habitat. It’s a wonderful African experience because you will have a chance to watch them at a close range while grazing! This activity is a once in a lifetime opportunity. The best time for Rhino Trekking is in the Morning between 08h00 to 10h00 or 16h00 to 18h00 because Rhinos are lazy when it’s hot.
After finding the rhinos, spend 1hr30 min to 2hrs30 mins observing and taking photos. While tracking rhinos, you need to wear closed shoes, long pants and also have an insect repellent.
